Pre-Cover-Up MEP Documentation: What to Capture Before the Drywall Goes Up

What commercial teams should document before MEP rough-ins, slabs, envelope, and underground work disappear behind finished construction.

Capture wide and close

A close photo proves detail. A wide photo proves location. Pre-cover-up documentation needs both, especially for MEP rough-ins, above-ceiling work, envelope conditions, and underground scopes.

Coordinate with the superintendent

The best time to document is usually narrow. Coordinate before drywall, backfill, pours, and finish materials cover the work.

Label the record

A folder named by date is useful. A folder named by date, area, and scope is better. Labels help PMs, owners, and subs find proof when payment or dispute questions come up.

Know what this is not

Visual documentation supports inspections and claims, but it does not replace licensed inspectors, engineers, or surveyors.
